Sanford, Fla., September 13, 2000 – As summer winds down, August rounds out the season with high passenger counts. Orlando Sanford International posted 11,732 domestic passengers and 128,507 international passengers for the month. These numbers place international traffic 13% above 1999 and domestic traffic nearly 166% above last year. Year-to-date passenger numbers have also increased an impressive 23%, with 112,531 domestic and 645,005 international travelers.
At the September board meeting, project managers announced that the Terminal Expansion Program was ahead of schedule and under budget. This was welcome news as Orlando Sanford’s growth continues to place strain on existing facilities. Upon its completion in fall 2000, the seven-gate terminal will house Pan Am, with its daily flights to Portsmouth, Chicago, Bangor, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis, along with the charter operators offering casino gambling packages to Gulfport/Biloxi, Atlantic City, Tunica, and the Bahamas. Newcomers Discover Air and Florida Air have also requested space in the new terminal and plan to offer flights to several southeastern destinations.
